  Introduction

Beethoven is an indispensable composer in the current Japanese classical music scene. The history of the reception of Beethoven in Japan has been studied for many years from several perspectives. One of the interesting facts that has been pointed out is that Beethoven was at a certain period known as “the composer of the ‘Moonlight Sonata’”. In other words, the title “Moonlight”, a title not derived from Beethoven himself, had become a symbol of Beethoven. This is an interesting example of the effect of the title. In this presentation, I would like to start with an overview of the titles of Beethoven’s works and related issues, and then consider the meaning of the titles, using the example of the reception of “Moonlight Sonata” in Japan. The anecdote of Beethoven’s performance for a blind girl formed the image of the sublime composer, and the main praise was not for the excellence and innovation of Beethoven’s musical works but for his humanity.
